Biography

Dan Marriott is a national leader in historic preservation, recognized for his diverse and interdisciplinary approach to landscape architecture, heritage, and cultural landscapes. A licensed landscape architect in Maryland, he spent the early part of his career working with design firms on projects that included planned communities and waterfront redevelopment. Marriott is the program director at the National Trust for Historic Preservation and currently leads his consulting practice, Paul Daniel Marriott + Associates, serving as a technical consultant to federal, state, tribal, and local governments, as well as educational institutions and international organizations. He has taught landscape history at George Washington University for 20 years and has been a guest lecturer and visiting critic at various esteemed programs including those at Columbia University, Cornell University, UCLA, the University of Maryland, and the University of Oregon. In addition to teaching a course on historic roads for the National Preservation Institute, he is an instructor for the American Institute of Architects Sustainable Cities Design Academy. An author of referenced books on historic roads, Marriott is regarded as a global expert on the topic. He has served as a field investigator for the World Heritage International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Mexico and has lectured on historic scenic roads in countries including Australia, France, and the United Kingdom. Notably, he was awarded the prestigious Fitch Foundation Fellowship in 2009 for historic preservation. In 2016, he was appointed to the Board of Trustees for the National Association of Olmsted Parks and has served as an expert commentator for PBS documentaries. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Fellowship from the National Library of Scotland in 2023. Marriott's work spans multiple countries, and he is passionate about global education as the director of education abroad for the Department of Landscape Architecture.
