Biography

Paul McGarr is a Lecturer in Intelligence Studies at King's College London, having joined in 2023. He holds an MA in International History from Royal Holloway, University of London, and completed his PhD at the same institution in 2008. Between 2009 and 2011, Paul held an AHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Nottingham, where he examined the CIA's contested history and its foreign policy. He then became a Lecturer and subsequently an Associate Professor at the Department of American and Canadian Studies at Nottingham from 2011 to 2023. Paul is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Asiatic Society. His research interests focus on security intelligence within the Anglosphere, clandestine diplomacy, and covert propaganda. He was the Principal Investigator for a British Academy-funded research project (2017-2019) that investigated the psychological influences affecting British diplomatic security relations with India. Moreover, he has held various national and international research fellowships, studying the interplay between intelligence activities and American diplomacy vis-à-vis India and Pakistan. Paul teaches various modules related to Intelligence, War Studies, and Diplomacy.
