Paul Murphy graduated from Cardiff University in 1988 with a BSc in Ophthalmic Optics. He completed his training at the Newcastle General Hospital's Department of Ophthalmology and acquired his optometric license in 1990 from the General Optical Council in the UK. He began his practice at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast specializing in the Contact Lens and Low Vision Unit. In 1993, he pursued graduate studies under the supervision of Professors Sudi Patel and John Marshall and was awarded a PhD by Glasgow Caledonian University in 1996 for his thesis on non-invasive methods for examining human corneal sensitivity. Following his PhD, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship and was appointed as a Lecturer in the Department of Vision Sciences at Glasgow Caledonian University in 1997, later becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2001. He directed the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at Cardiff University from 2001 until his appointment as director at the University of Waterloo in 2013. His research interests focus on anterior ocular surface, including instrument design, contact lens wear, and tear film physiology. Murphy has published works concerning visual impairment and optometric practices and is a member of the Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology and the Centre for Ocular Research and Education at the University of Waterloo.
