Biography

Paul Newton received his B.S. degree in Applied Mathematics/Physics from Harvard University in 1981 and completed his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at Brown University in 1986 under the supervision of G.F. Carrier. He started his academic career as a post-doctoral scholar at Stanford University with J.B. Keller. Newton became an Assistant Professor in Mathematics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1987, advancing to Associate Professor in 1993. He joined the Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering Department at USC in 1993, achieving Full Professor status in 1998. His research focuses on applied mathematics, particularly in nonlinear low-dimensional dynamical systems, the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible fluid flows, computational oncology, and dynamical systems models of cancer progression. He has authored multiple refereed journal articles and served as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Nonlinear Science. Newton has received several prestigious awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2024 and the AAAS Fellow designation in 2020.
