Biography

Paul Newton received his B.S. degree in Applied Mathematics/Physics from Harvard University in 1981, with a thesis supervised by G.F. Carrier. He completed his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at Brown University in 1986. Newton worked as a post-doctoral scholar in the Mathematics Department at Stanford University under J.B. Keller. He joined the Mathematics Department at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1987, becoming an Assistant Professor and later an Associate Professor in 1993. In 1993, he moved to the Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering Department at USC, where he was promoted to Full Professor in 1998. Aside from his main position, he is heavily involved in research at the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Ellison Institute, focusing on applied mathematics in various complex systems. He has published over 100 refereed journal articles and held various visiting appointments across multiple prestigious institutions. Paul is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nonlinear Science and has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2020. In 2024, he was named a Guggenheim Fellow in the area of Applied Mathematics.
