Biography

Paul O’Gorman joined the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2008 and currently serves as Faculty Chair and EAPS Graduate Officer. He holds a BA in Theoretical Physics and an MSc in High-Performance Computing from Trinity College, Dublin, and earned his PhD in Aeronautics with a minor in Applied Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 2004. Paul continued his studies at Caltech as a postdoctoral scholar in Environmental Science and Engineering before coming to MIT. His research focuses on advancing the understanding of large-scale dynamics of the atmosphere, particularly in relation to precipitation extremes and climate change. Paul is involved in five MIT Climate Grand Challenges flagship projects aimed at mobilizing the research community to tackle critical climate problems, including a project titled 'Preparing for a New World of Weather and Climate Extremes,' which seeks to build scalable tools to help vulnerable communities predict future climatic extremes and transition to low-carbon resources.
