Biography

Professor Paul Peters completed his BA (Hons.) in German at the University of Manitoba in 1976 and resumed his studies at Freie Universität Berlin, where he was awarded a Dr. Phil. in 1988 focusing on Germanistics and philosophy. His teaching career began as a Tutor (TA) at Freie Universität in 1983-1985, advancing through the ranks to Faculty Lecturer in 1987, Assistant Professor in 1989, Associate Professor in 1996, and finally becoming a Professor at McGill University in 2008. He has also served as a Visiting Professor at Université de Montréal during the years 1999-2000. Peters' primary research focus is on Heinrich Heine, with significant works including his dissertation on Anti-Semitism in Heine's reception and several edited volumes and articles on Heine's poetry. His current research interests include Kafka, Brecht, and Paul Celan, as well as themes in German cultural history from the Weimar to the Romantic periods, exploring connections between literature, politics, and culture through the lenses of prominent theorists such as Walter Benjamin and Theodor W. Adorno.
