Biography

Professor Paul Pickering is the Director of the Australian Studies Institute and has had an extensive academic career, most notably at the Australian National University (ANU). He has served as the Director of the Research School of Humanities and the Arts from 2012 to 2021 and held other significant positions including Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences and inaugural Director of the ANU Centre for European Studies. His research interests encompass a wide range of topics including Australian, British, and Irish social, political, and cultural history, with a particular focus on public memory and commemoration, as well as digital humanities. Professor Pickering has published extensively in these fields and is currently working on a book about the industrial heritage of Manchester, set to be published by Routledge in 2022. He has participated in various fellowships, including one at the University of Edinburgh and the Huntington Library in California, and has held visiting positions at St. Andrews University and Durham University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and received the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Supervision in 2012.
