Biography

Paul Resnick is the Michael D. Cohen Collegiate Professor and Associate Dean of Research and Faculty Affairs at the University of Michigan's School of Information. He previously worked as a researcher at AT&T Labs and AT&T Bell Labs, and served as an Assistant Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management. With a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT and a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, Resnick's research focuses on SocioTechnical Capital and how productive social relations can enhance the use of information and communication technology. His current projects explore nudging individuals towards politically balanced news consumption and managing health behavior change through crowdsourced rumor tracking and fact correction. He is known as a pioneer in the field of recommender systems, which facilitate user engagement by suggesting interesting materials based on collective recommendations. His work led to the development of the GroupLens system, which received the ACM Software Systems Award in 2010. Resnick has published extensively in notable venues such as Scientific American, Wired, and Communications of the ACM, and is the co-author of the book 'Building Successful Online Communities: Evidence-based Social Design' published by MIT Press in 2012.
