Paul Robben graduated as a general practitioner from the University of Utrecht in 1978 and has extensive experience in general practice and psychiatric departments of a general hospital. He worked as a nursing home physician and later shifted to ambulant psycho-geriatric care for the elderly. In 1991, he obtained his registration as a social geriatrician. Robben received his PhD in Social Science in 2002, studying the origins and development of medical professions in geriatric care, under the supervision of Professors Giel Hutschemaekers and Paul Schnabel. He served as an inspector of mental health care at the Dutch Health Care Inspectorate in 2002 and became the director of the Knowledge Center there in 2005. He initiated an evaluation program focusing on the effectiveness of supervision conducted by the Inspectorate. On November 1, 2009, he was appointed as an extraordinary professor focusing on the effectiveness of supervision and quality in health care. His research emphasizes the mechanisms leading to effective supervision as part of health care regulation, aiming to improve methods and instruments of supervision. Currently, he supervises several PhD students focused on various aspects of thematic and incident supervision in health care.
