Biography

Paul Schechter received his PhD in Physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1975. He has held postdoctoral positions at the Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Arizona, and has been on the faculty at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Schechter was also part of the scientific staff at the Kitt Peak National Observatory and the Carnegie Observatories. His research predominantly focuses on gravitational lensing, including the phenomena of both macro and micro-lensing, which affect the way light is perceived from distant astronomical objects like active galactic nuclei and supernovae. He has developed techniques in wavefront sensing for correcting gravitational thermal deformations in telescope mirrors, enhancing the precision of astronomical observations.
