Biography

Paul H. Simms is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University, where he also serves as the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies in Environmental Engineering. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering Science, a Master of Engineering Science, and a Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario. His research focuses on mine waste management, with particular interests in thickened tailings disposal and surface backfill. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of fundamental unsaturated soil mechanics and the evolution of soil microstructure due to drying. Prof. Simms has mentored several graduate students and teaches various courses related to waste management, municipal hydraulics, contaminant transport, and environmental geotechnical engineering. He was awarded the Research Achievement Award by Carleton University in 2011 for his notable contributions to the field.
