Biography

Paul Starr is a professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University, where he also holds the position of Stuart Professor of communications in the School of Public and International Affairs. His work addresses a wide range of questions related to politics, public policy, and social theory. Current research interests include institutional analysis, political sociology, the sociology of knowledge, and the impact of technology and information on democracy, equality, and freedom. Previously, he served as a senior health policy advisor in the White House in 1993. Starr's publications include influential works on health care institutions and policies, such as "Social Transformation of American Medicine," which won the Bancroft Prize, C. Wright Mills Award, and Pulitzer Prize. His later book, "Remedy and Reaction: The Peculiar American Struggle Over Health Care Reform," continues to contribute to the discourse on health care policy. Additionally, his book "Creation of Media: Political Origins of Modern Communications" received the Goldsmith Book Prize, and "Freedom’s Power" explores the philosophical development of liberalism.
