Biography

Paul W. Sternberg is a prominent biologist and the Bren Professor at the Kavli Nanoscience Institute, Caltech. He has made significant contributions to the fields of biology and biological engineering. After obtaining his B.A. from Hampshire College in 1978 and his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984, he embarked on an academic career at Caltech. From 1987 to 1992, he served as an Assistant Professor, followed by an Associate Professor from 1992 to 1996, and then as a Professor from 1996 to 2004. Subsequently, he held the title of Morgan Professor from 2004 until 2017, before being appointed as the Bren Professor. Besides his teaching and research commitments, he has served as Division Chair and is also noted for his role as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator from 1992 to 2017. His leadership and research have significantly impacted the academic landscape, particularly within biological engineering and nanoscience.
