Dr. Paul Ugor

Biography

Paul Ugor is a Professor at the University of Waterloo specializing in African Postcolonial and World Literatures. He completed his B.A. in Theatre Studies at the University of Calabar in 1996, his M.A. at the University of Ibadan in 2001, and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in 2009. His main research interests center on modern African literature, Nollywood cinema, African youth cultures, and Black popular culture. Ugor is currently working on a monograph focusing on the screen media output of Femi Odugbemi, a leading Nigerian film director and TV producer. In addition to his research, he is co-editing several volumes, including 'Postcolonial Bildungsroman' and 'Narratives of Transitional Justice'. Ugor's scholarly contributions include edited collections and journal special issues that explore youth, cultural politics, and representation in Africa. He has been recognized with awards such as the Outstanding College Researcher at Illinois State University (2022) and a fellowship from the National Humanities Center (2021-2022). His areas of graduate supervision include Modern African Literature, African Cinema, Black Popular Culture, and Postcolonial Literatures.
