Paul Upchurch studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, obtaining a PhD in Vertebrate Palaeontology. He held postdoctoral research fellowships at both Cambridge and Bristol before joining University College London (UCL) in 2003. From 2018 until 2023, he served as the Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at UCL. In addition to his research, Upchurch teaches on vertebrate evolution and is particularly interested in equity, diversity, and inclusion, stemming from his own experience with severe visual impairment from the age of eight. He strives to leverage his lived experience as a disabled person alongside his academic knowledge to enhance the experiences of underrepresented groups in STEM. He currently chairs a subcommittee on disability that is part of the Royal Society's Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
