Biography

Paul Van Oorschot is a Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carleton University, where he has been a faculty member since 2002. He held the Canada Research Chair in Authentication and Computer Security from 2002 to 2023 and has contributed significantly to the field of computer and internet security. He is a co-author of the Handbook of Applied Cryptography and has served as the Scientific Director of the NSERC Internetworked Systems Security Network, a pan-Canadian strategic research network exploring various aspects of computer and internet security. Van Oorschot's academic journey includes earning a Master’s and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, where he was awarded the J.W. Graham Medal for Computing Innovation in 2000. In 2011, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the oldest association of scientists and scholars in Canada. His research interests encompass authentication, computer security, internet security, and applied cryptography, focusing on various topics such as identity management, network and software security, usability security, and smartphone security.
