Biography

Paul Van Oorschot joined the School of Computer Science at Carleton University in 2002 and has served as a professor and Canada Research Chair in Authentication and Computer Security. His research interests focus on authentication, computer security, and information security, with specific attention to topics such as smartphone security, usable security, and public-key infrastructure. He has co-authored the Handbook of Applied Cryptography and directed the NSERC Internetworked Systems Security Network from 2008 to 2013, which was a pan-Canadian strategic research initiative dedicated to exploring internet security challenges. Van Oorschot earned his Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, where he was awarded the J.W. Graham Medal for Computing Innovation in 2000 and was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2011. His contributions to the field are recognized through his active engagement in research and leadership roles, establishing him as a prominent figure in computer security research in Canada.
