Biography

Paul completed a BSc (Hons) in Immunology at the University of Glasgow and a PhD investigating the associations of inflammatory biomarkers with cardiovascular disease under Professor Gordon Lowe at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He worked with Professor Naveed Sattar and was awarded the BHF Advanced Training Fellowship in 2010 and the BHF Intermediate Basic Scientist Fellowship in 2013, focusing on the use of natriuretic peptides as biomarkers of cardiac stress in the general population. Paul received a distinction for the 150th Anniversary prize for his MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2014, was awarded Readership in 2019, and became a Chair in 2023. He is a trustee of the charity Scottish Heart Arterial disease Risk Prevention (SHARP). Paul leads the Glasgow Biomarker Research Unit (GlasBRU), where his team conducts a wide range of assays on blood, urine, and saliva samples performed in routine clinical biochemistry settings and specialized tests. He is actively involved in seminal observational studies and clinical trials, with access to a vast biobank from current and historical studies.
