Paul obtained a class honors degree from the University of Leeds, followed by a PhD from the University of London. He moved to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego for his postdoctoral work, joining the Neuroscience Research Centre at Merck Research Laboratories and subsequently becoming the Head of Molecular and Cellular Neurosciences. Paul joined Pfizer in 2006, and in 2008 helped establish the new Pfizer Regenerative Medicine research unit in Cambridge, UK, leading small molecule cell therapy programs. In 2011, the regenerative medicine activities were incorporated into Pfizer Neusentis, where he became the Head of Molecular and Cellular Biology. In October 2015, he moved to UCL's Institute of Neurology to become the Chief Scientific Officer for the Alzheimer’s Research UK UCL Drug Discovery Institute. In 2017, he became Programme Leader at the UK Dementia Research Institute at UCL. In 2022, he stepped down from his role as CSO to become the pre-clinical lead of the UCL Neurogenetic Therapies Programme. Paul's scientific contributions span ion channel neurobiology, the biology of schizophrenia, and pluripotent stem cell-based disease modeling of neurodegenerative diseases. He leads drug and cell therapy programs from basic research to clinical trials and has co-authored 200 scientific publications, serving on various advisory boards and committees.
