Dr. Paul Wischmeyer

Biography

Paul Wischmeyer, MD, EDIC, FASPEN, FCCM is a tenured Professor of Anesthesiology and Surgery at Duke University, where he also serves as Associate Vice Chair of Clinical Research in the Department of Anesthesiology and Director of the TPN/Nutrition Team. He specializes in enhancing patient preparation and recovery in surgery and critical care, particularly in the context of COVID-19. Dr. Wischmeyer earned his medical degree with honors from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and has completed various fellowships and residencies, including a Clinical Pharmacology fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. His primary research interests encompass nutritional support in the surgical ICU, perioperative optimization, and the role of probiotics in patient recovery. He has been awarded multiple grants and has published extensively, with over 250 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Wischmeyer is also a sought-after speaker at national and international medical meetings, having delivered over 1000 invited presentations throughout his career.
