Biography

Paula Baumann joined Prof. Volker Hoffmann’s Group as a PhD candidate in Sustainability Technology, focusing on the policies needed to establish hydrogen value chains in Switzerland and integrate into international markets. Her research employs techno-economic modeling to compare domestic and import-based hydrogen pathways, evaluating strategic options for Switzerland’s role in global hydrogen markets. Prior to joining SusTec, Paula worked at the German Environment Agency on the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism in Berlin. She holds both a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration from RWTH Aachen University, where she specialized in production technologies and corporate sustainability. Her master’s thesis at ETH Zurich’s Reliability Risk Engineering Lab explored the role of hydrogen in decarbonizing European hard-to-abate industries.
