Dr. Paula Buttery

Biography

Paula Buttery is a Professor of Language and Machine Learning at the University of Cambridge's Department of Computer Science and Technology. She serves as the Deputy Head of the Department and is a Fellow at Gonville and Caius College. With a keen interest in computational linguistics, she investigates fundamental questions about language evolution, language learning efficiency, and the organization of language-related information for specific tasks. Her current research focuses on developing a lightweight research framework called Pico for designing performant Small and Baby Language Models. Buttery's work explores the performance and interpretability of language models, aiming to equalize opportunities in AI. She also develops Natural Language Processing techniques that interface with language cognition from a computational psycholinguistics perspective, focusing on building tools for non-canonical forms of natural language, including those from low-resource languages and dialects. Her teams have included numerous research students, contributing to various projects aimed at advancing the field of language processing and AI.
