Dr. Paula Koelemeijer

Biography

Paula Koelemeijer is an Associate Professor in Geophysics and a Royal Society University Research Fellow at Exeter College, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on utilizing seismic waves to understand the Earth's interior and planetary-scale processes, as well as social seismology. She studies tiny seismic signals recorded at the Earth's surface to address fundamental questions about the deep interior and to provide detailed insights into both human and animal behavior. Paula collaborates intensively with geodynamicists, mineral physicists, biologists, and computer scientists, and employs a variety of techniques and methodologies to tackle particular research questions. Her expertise spans seismological observations, seismic tomography, inverse methods, and the linking of seismology with geodynamics and mineral physics. She has ample experience in guiding students and researchers through fellowship applications and project discussions, emphasizing the importance of early planning due to funding deadlines. At the undergraduate level, Paula teaches courses such as 'Mathematics for Earth Sciences' and 'Geophysics of the Deep Earth', contributing significantly to the academic environment in the Department of Earth Sciences.
