Dr. Paula Mcclain

Biography

Paula D. McClain is the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor in Political Science at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. She holds a Ph.D. from Howard University, awarded in 1977, and has extensive experience in various academic and administrative roles, including Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate School. Her research focuses on racial minority group politics, inter-minority social competition, and urban political dynamics, with numerous publications in prestigious journals such as the American Political Science Review and the Journal of Politics. McClain is a past president of several political science associations and has received numerous awards for her contributions to the field, including the Duke University Blue Ribbon Diversity Award. Her notable works include co-authoring significant editions of the book 'Can We Get Along? Racial and Ethnic Minorities in American Politics' and 'American Government: Black and White'. She actively engages in the academic community, directing programs aimed at enhancing diversity in political science and mentoring future leaders in the field.
