Biography

Paula K. Shireman is a Professor and Executive Associate Dean at Texas A&M University Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine since 2022. She is the principal investigator for a NIH multicenter U01 grant aimed at developing predictive models related to surgical outcomes, frailty, and social risk factors. Her goal is to utilize data to transform health care and influence federal policy for designing financially sustainable care pathways that enhance outcomes for patients of low socioeconomic status. Her research interests encompass predictive modeling, machine learning, and simulation. Additionally, she serves on the Advisory Council of the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) and on the Review Board of the NIH Cures Acceleration Network (CAN). She is involved in developing measures for Peripheral Vascular Disease Management and leads the Clinical Subcommittee Workgroup on Hemodialysis Access Creation. Dr. Shireman has been a multi-principal investigator on the Institutional Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) with UT Health San Antonio and the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, and has received multiple external awards from the NIH and Veterans Administration for her basic, translational, and clinical research. Dr. Shireman holds an MD from Indiana University, an MS in Clinical Investigation from UTHSA, and an MBA from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. She is board-certified in General Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Clinical Informatics, and Wound Care.
