Dr. Paula Van Wyk

Biography

Dr. Paula van Wyk is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Windsor. Her research primarily focuses on aging populations and the various factors that support their quality of life. Dr. van Wyk’s extensive studies investigate person-environment fit, cognitive reserve, caregiver burden, fall prevention, and rehabilitation interventions for older adults. Her interest in kinesiology began in her youth, driven by a passion for injury prevention and optimizing physical abilities through dance and sports participation. In her later academic endeavors, she has also focused on the implications of her findings for vulnerable populations, including individuals living with Cerebral Palsy, Parkinson’s Disease, and autism spectrum disorders. Dr. van Wyk employs a diverse range of tools and methodologies, integrating principles from Motor Control and Behaviour, Ergonomics, Biomechanics, and Physiology to assess and enhance the care and active living of older adults. She is dedicated to addressing the increasing demand for effective rehabilitation strategies, examining the role of physical and health literacy in keeping older adults engaged and active within their communities. Engaging in scholarship and teaching, Dr. van Wyk contributes to her field through various publications and educational programs aimed at fostering a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by an aging population.
