Paulien Herder graduated in Chemical Engineering from TU Delft in 1994. In 1999, she received her PhD from the Faculty of Technology, Policy Management (TPM) and continued her research within TPM focusing on the design of large-scale complex systems. She was closely involved with the international research consortium Generation Infrastructures. From 2004 to 2007, she served as the director of education at TPM. In 2009, she was appointed as a Professor of Engineering Systems Design in Energy & Industry. Between 2013 and 2019, she directed the Delft Energy Initiative and served as departmental chair for the Engineering Systems Services department from 2014 to 2018. In 2019, she transitioned to the Department of Process & Energy within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and took on the role of programme leader for e-Refinery, an interfaculty initiative focused on developing technological systems for the production of raw materials and fuels from renewable energy sources. In 2020, she became chair of the Chemical Engineering department and was appointed as dean on March 1, 2021. Paulien actively participates in the energy sector at TU Delft and is a board member of GroenvermogenNL, a national growth fund program focusing on green hydrogen and green chemistry. Additionally, she has held administrative supervisory roles in the energy industry and was a member of the Supervisory Board at Hotelschool The Hague, and served on the board of NWO in the domain of Applied Engineering Sciences from 2019 to 2020.
