Biography

Originally from Medellin, Colombia, Paulina Jaramillo is a naturalized citizen of the U.S. and has spent most of her life there. She is currently a Professor in the Engineering Public Policy department at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and serves as the Co-Director of the Open Energy Outlook Initiative. Jaramillo is also a fellow at the Scott Institute for Energy Innovation and holds a research appointment at the Kigali Collaborative Research Center. Her role includes a courtesy appointment at CMU Africa. Notably, she is the coordinating lead author for the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report, specifically working with Working Group III, and is a current member of the NAS Roundtable on Macroeconomic Climate-related Risks and Opportunities. Her past research has focused on life cycle assessments of energy systems, emphasizing the impacts of climate change and mitigation strategies. Jaramillo is involved in multi-disciplinary research aimed at understanding the social, economic, and environmental implications of transitions in the U.S. energy system. Additionally, she is passionate about energy access issues in the Global South, believing that energy provision in developing countries carries significant implications for global environmental systems. Her work seeks to create the necessary knowledge to meet global energy needs and support climate mitigation efforts.
