Biography

Pauline Jacobs is an Associate Professor of Criminal (Procedure) Law at Tilburg University. She obtained an LL.M. in Criminal Private Law and completed a Research Master in Law (M.Phil). Prior to her position at Tilburg, she worked as a teacher in the Institute of Criminal Law and Criminology at Leiden University and as an Assistant Professor in criminal law and criminal procedure at the Willem Pompe Institute at Utrecht University. Her main research interests lie in criminal (procedure) law and human rights, with a particular focus on penitentiary law. Her areas of expertise include pre-trial detention, the legal position of prisoners, life sentences, hunger strikes in prisons, appeal procedures, and issues concerning transgender prisoners in relation to international human rights norms. Jacobs is involved in several organizations, including the Council for the Administration of Criminal Justice and Protection of Juveniles and the Association for Penitentiary Law and Penology. She also serves on the editorial board of 'Nederlands Tijdschrift voor de Mensenrechten', the leading Dutch Human Rights Review, and is a member of the expert pool at the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture. She teaches courses on Criminal Liability and Penitentiary Law and supervises master's theses related to her field.
