Pauline Jacobson received her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology in 1968 and a Ph.D. in Linguistics in 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley. She has been on the faculty at Brown University since 1975. Jacobson has held visiting appointments at Ohio State University and Harvard, where she conducted shorter visiting 'minicourses'. Her research focuses on the formal tools necessary to model the syntactic and semantic systems of natural languages, with a special emphasis on the interaction between syntax and semantics. She is particularly concerned with the hypothesis of 'Direct Compositionality,' which maintains that there is a direct and transparent fit between syntactic and semantic compositions without relying on levels of 'Logical Form'. Jacobson argues for the advantages of adopting Variable Free Semantics and has served as past president of the Linguistics and Philosophy Associates, as well as editor-in-chief of the journal Linguistics and Philosophy published by Springer. She has also served on various editorial boards and panels for the National Science Foundation. Jacobson teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on a variety of topics in syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, including introductory linguistics courses.
