Biography

Pavel Etingof is a Professor of Mathematics at MIT, a position he has held since 2005. He is also the Chief Research Advisor for the MIT PRIMES Program, which supports high school students in mathematics and engineering science. Etingof completed his M.S. in applied mathematics at the Moscow Oil & Gas Institute in 1989 and earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University in 1994, under the supervision of Igor Frenkel. He began his academic career at Harvard as an Assistant Professor and joined the MIT mathematics faculty in 1998. His research primarily focuses on representation theory, quantum groups, and noncommutative algebra. Etingof has co-authored eight texts and served as the Chair of the Graduate Student Committee from 2002 to 2005. He has received several prestigious awards, including the Clay Mathematics Institute Prize Fellowship in 1999 and selection as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2013. Notably, he initiated the PRIMES program in 2010, aiming to increase representation of women and under-served minorities in mathematics research. The program has been recognized with multiple awards, including the 2020 Award for Exemplary Program Achievement from AMS.
