Biography

Pawel Swietach is a Professor of Physiology at the University of Oxford and a Fellow at Corpus Christi College. He leads the Proton Transport Group in Oxford's Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics. Pawel studied Physiological Sciences at Oxford, winning the Physiological Society Prize in 2001, and completed a DPhil in Physiology in 2004. His postdoctoral work, under Richard Vaughan-Jones at Oxford and Kenneth Spitzer at Utah, focused on the impacts of pH on cardiac calcium signalling. In 2008, he was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship, exploring cancer pH biology and mentoring Adrian Harris. In 2017, he secured a European Research Council Consolidator Grant to study acid-selection in colorectal cancer, launching a British Heart Foundation programme on the acidity of hypertrophic growth. Elected to the Academia Europaea in 2024, Swietach is a Fellow of the Physiological Society, contributing to collaborative projects linking chemistry and medicine. His research group integrates quantitative modelling and imaging with mechanistic experiments, aiming to enhance diagnostics and treatment in cardiology, oncology, and haematology. Areas of focus include the study of cardiac physiology and metabolism, the role of pH in cancer progression, and optimizing blood oxygen transport.
