Biography

Professor Payam Barnaghi is the Chair of Machine Intelligence in Applied Medicine at the Department of Brain Sciences, Imperial College London. His research centers on advancing the applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in healthcare. He leads a research group dedicated to developing affordable and scalable digital solutions aimed at improving outcomes in a variety of health conditions, with a particular emphasis on neurodegenerative disorders and rare, complex diseases. His work integrates statistical probabilistic modeling, deep learning, natural language processing, and multimodal data fusion, leveraging large-scale electronic health records, neuroimaging, and wearable sensor data to facilitate early diagnosis, personalized care, and predictive modeling. Professor Barnaghi holds the Great Ormond Street Hospital/Royal Academy Engineering Research Chair in Machine Intelligence Medicine and serves as Co-Director of the School of Convergence Science (Human and Artificial Intelligence). He is also Deputy Head of the Division of Neurology at Imperial College London. He contributes as a Principal Investigator and Group Lead at the Translational Machine Intelligence Care Research Technology Centre and is a Co-Investigator on the Steering Committee of the British Heart Foundation Centre for Research Excellence at Imperial. He also holds a visiting professorship at the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, University College London.
