Biography

Payman Arabshahi is a Professor and the Associate Chair of Education at the University of Washington's Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering. He also serves as a Principal Research Scientist at the University of Washington Applied Physics Laboratory. His research career includes significant roles from 1994 to 1996 in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and from 1997 to 2006, he was part of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) as senior technical staff, focusing on Earth orbit deep space communication networks and protocols. He has taught a three-course graduate sequence in digital communications at Caltech as an affiliate graduate faculty. His broad research interests span the fundamentals and applications of networks, specifically in areas such as environmental monitoring using wireless sensor networks, resilience in critical networks including power and telecom, emergency communications, and underwater space communication networks. His work addresses challenges in social networks like mobility, health, and disaster resilience. He has participated in community outreach, led fundamental theoretical research, and conducted both lab and field experiments. Additionally, he directs the NSF Industry University Cooperative Research Center Soil Technologies.
