Biography

Peder J. Estrup is a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Physics at Brown University. He has a Master's degree in Chemistry from the Royal Polytechnic University in Copenhagen, Denmark, and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Yale University. As a Fulbright Scholar and Sheffield Scholar at Yale, he later became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the European Center for Nuclear Research in Switzerland. Estrup's academic career includes significant roles such as the Newport Rogers Professor in Chemistry and Physics, Dean of the Graduate School Research, and Chair of the Brown Chemistry Department from 1989 to 1996. His research primarily focuses on surface chemistry, exploring the physical properties and chemical reactions of metal semiconductor surfaces. His experimental studies aim to develop realistic models for gas-solid interface processes, chemisorption, film growth, and two-dimensional phase transitions. He has been influential in the study of adsorption phenomena and bonding interactions at the atomic level. His extensive contributions to the field have been recognized through various honors, including being named a Fellow of the American Physical Society and receiving the Proctor & Gamble Award.
