Biography

Pedram Hassanzadeh is an associate professor at the University of Chicago, specializing in the Department of Geophysical Sciences and the Committee on Computational and Applied Mathematics. He earned his Ph.D. in geophysical turbulence and his M.A. in applied mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2013. Prior to joining the University of Chicago, he was a tenured associate professor at Rice University. Dr. Hassanzadeh has received several prestigious awards including the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation in 2021 and the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research in 2020. His research focuses on a broad array of topics including climate dynamics, scientific machine learning, fluid dynamics, computational physics, and dynamical systems. He leads the Climate Extremes Theory Data (C e TD) group, which is dedicated to integrating theory, simulations, and observations with machine learning techniques to understand the dynamics underlying future changes in extreme weather events due to a changing climate. His group is also interested in developing new scientific machine learning techniques to improve the modeling and analysis of climate systems and turbulent flows, particularly in multi-scale and nonlinear dynamical systems.
