Biography

Pedro Cabrales Arevalo is a professor in the Bioengineering department at the Jacobs School of Engineering, UC San Diego. His research focuses on gas transport physiology and bioengineering for the development of next-generation blood substitutes. His work includes studying the effects of blood substitutes on oxygen transport and tissue metabolism. Cabrales aims to design novel therapeutic interventions to treat, manage, and ultimately prevent diseases through integrative analysis of physical and chemical phenomena using principles and methods from engineering sciences. His current research investigates the in vivo understanding of the transport of biological gases, such as nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon monoxide, and how these gases affect biological function and are regulated under various conditions including inflammation and various blood cell pathologies. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2003 from the University of Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, and previously served as an Assistant Research Scientist at the La Jolla Bioengineering Institute.
