Biography

Pedro Lopes is an Associate Professor at the University of Chicago, where he leads the Human Computer Integration Lab. His research focuses on engineering interactive devices that integrate with the user's body, enhancing human-computer interaction through innovative wearable technologies. Lopes' work involves developing devices that utilize electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to actuate the body, allowing for new modalities of interaction that include a range of sensory experiences. His projects aim to explore how bodily-integrated interfaces can improve reaction times and provide more realistic simulations in virtual and augmented reality settings. In addition to his technical research, Lopes is committed to addressing societal challenges like electronic waste through computationally-driven recycling initiatives. He educates future innovators in his classes on human-computer interaction, guiding students through hands-on experiences in hardware and software systems.
