Dr. Pedro Marques

Biography

Pedro Marques is a Departmental Lecturer in the Master's program of Sustainable Urban Development at the University of Oxford. He was previously associated with INGENIO, a research center in Valencia, Spain, and the Spanish National Research Council. His academic experience includes positions at the University of Sussex, Cardiff University, and Newcastle University. Marques specializes in the fields of regional development, development politics, inequality, and innovation.He has a PhD in Economic Geography, complemented by a Master's degree in Regional Development from Newcastle University and a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from ISCTE-IUL, Lisbon. Throughout his career, he has engaged in empirical research across various European countries, focusing on the development trajectories of economically lagging regions. His work emphasizes the role of innovation, institutions, and public policy in shaping these trajectories. Marques has collaborated with policymakers and stakeholders at national levels in the UK, Spain, and Portugal as well as with international organizations such as the European Commission and OECD. His ultimate goal is to contribute to effective policymaking that fosters sustainable development.
