Biography

Professor Pedro Rivera is a faculty member in Structural Materials at the University of Southampton. He was appointed as a Professor in February 2023. Prior to this role, he served as a Professor at Lancaster University from 2017 to January 2023 and was the Deputy Director of the Steel Technology Centre at the University of Cambridge from 2009 to 2017. His research primarily focuses on alloy design, microstructure-property relationships, and additive manufacturing. Rivera leads a new research group at Southampton that addresses challenges in alloy microstructure design for additive layer manufacturing, incorporating advanced characterization and mathematical modeling. His work targets a variety of metallurgical issues such as adhesion, hydrogen embrittlement, and rolling contact fatigue, particularly in the context of industries such as nuclear, wind turbine, and automotive. He has published extensively in international journals, with over 175 articles and several international patents to his name. Rivera actively engages with PhD students and is dedicated to developing sustainable alloys with exceptional properties for emerging industries.
