Biography

Peggy Brunache is a lecturer in history at the University of Glasgow and the first Director of the newly established Beniba Centre for Slavery Studies. Born to Haitian parents in Miami, she is trained as a historical archaeologist with a focus on plantation studies, the African diaspora, and the transatlantic slave trade. Her work includes archaeological projects in Benin, West Africa, Guadeloupe, and various sites in the United States. Peggy is a founding member of the European Society of Black Allied Archaeologists (ESBAA) and has developed a free 4-week ongoing online course on 'British Slavery in the Caribbean' available on Futurelearn.com. Her projects often intersect with food, music, and science festivals, with food being central to her life’s work. She serves as a culinary consultant for Perth’s Southern Fried music festival and has made media appearances on the Food Network in the US, as well as BBC TV's Black British documentary series, and regularly contributes to BBC Radio Scotland’s programmes.
