Biography

Pei Zhong's research focuses on engineering technology development applications for non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments. His work primarily involves shock wave laser lithotripsy for kidney stone disease, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) immunotherapy for cancer treatment, and acoustic optical cavitation. Zhong employs an integrated translational approach that combines fundamental research with engineering applied technology to devise novel ultrasonic, optical, and mechanical tools for various clinical applications. He is particularly interested in the interaction between shock waves, laser fluids, bubbles, and solids, studying the resultant mechanical and thermal fields that lead to material damage removal. His research also investigates the stress response of biological cells and tissues during ultrasound exposure, mediated by mechanosensitive ion channels like Piezo 1. Zhong's research activities are primarily supported by collaborations with the National Institutes of Health and the medical device industry.
