Biography

Penelope J.E. Quintana is a Professor in the Division of Environmental Health at the Graduate School of Public Health. Her research focuses on exposures in children and vulnerable populations along the US-Mexico border. She has assessed children’s exposure to toxicants found in house dust and surfaces, highlighting the residual tobacco toxicants linked to smoking, known as third-hand smoke. Collaborating with researchers from the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California in Tijuana, she studied the markers of DNA damage in placentas from a Tijuana hospital, focusing on exposure to toxic traffic pollutants affecting pedestrians in lines crossing the US-Mexico border. Quintana authored a recent report that draws attention to the lengthy northbound wait lines of idling vehicles at the US-Mexico Ports of Entry, highlighting it as an environmental justice issue impacting border crossers and local communities. She is a member of the Scientific Guidance Panel for the California Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program.
