Biography

Penny Fielding is a Professor of English Literature and Research Director at the University of Edinburgh. She earned her BA and DPhil from the University of Oxford and has held lectureships at the University of Bristol and Trinity College Dublin. Additionally, she has served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania and was a Visiting Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford. Fielding is a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Her research interests are primarily focused on literature from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with a particular emphasis on Scottish writing. She has authored several books concerning theories of language and the concepts of space and place in Scotland. Presently, she serves as the General Editor of the New Edinburgh Edition of the Works of Robert Louis Stevenson. Fielding is also engaged in a project related to fiction and espionage from the French Revolution to the Cold War, and she is keen on supervising PhD students in these research areas. Alongside Robert Irvine, she co-directs the Research Project on Scottish Writing in the Nineteenth Century, and she is interested in collaborating with students in this field. Furthermore, Fielding is the Principal Investigator of the AHRC project 'Writing North' and serves as a co-editor (with Ian Duncan) for the Edinburgh Critical Studies in Romanticism.
