Biography

Per-Åke Nygren is a Professor at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in the School of Biotechnology. He serves as the Head of the Division of Protein Technology and leads the Affinity Protein Engineering group. His research interests focus on affinity protein biotechnology, particularly in aspects of affinity chromatography, diagnostics, and serum half-life extension for biologicals and biotherapy. He has an extensive track record in working with natural and engineered forms of bacterial serum protein binding proteins, particularly immunoglobulin binding regions. Since the mid-1990s, he has pioneered the concept of affibody binding proteins by employing combinatorial protein engineering and protein library technology to develop novel non-immunoglobulin binding proteins. His work continues to involve applications of engineered variants developed for use in protein microarrays, diagnostic assays, and cancer diagnostics. Additionally, he focuses on refining protein library selection systems including phage display and ribosome display.
