Biography

Gunnar Martinsson is a professor of mathematics at the University of Texas at Austin and a member of the Oden Institute, where he holds the W. 'Tex' Moncrief, Jr. Endowment Simulation-Based Engineering Sciences - Endowed Chair. He joined UT in 2018 after serving as a professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford. Prior to that, he was on the faculty at the University of Colorado, Boulder from 2005 to 2017 and held the position of Gibbs assistant professor at Yale University. Martinsson completed his Ph.D. in Computational Applied Mathematics at UT-Austin in 2002. The program he graduated from has since evolved into the Oden Institute's Computational Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics program. He received the Germund Dahlquist Prize from SIAM in 2017. In addition to his role at UT, he holds an affiliated professorship at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm and chairs the scientific advisory board of MathDataLab. His research focuses on numerical analysis, scientific computing, and computational data science, with recent work involving randomized algorithms in linear algebra, fast solvers for elliptic PDEs, and methods for modeling complex materials.
