Per-Olof Syrén obtained his PhD in Biotechnology in 2011 from KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Following his PhD, he pursued postdoctoral research as an Alexander von Humboldt fellow at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, from 2011 to 2013. After returning to Sweden, he established his own research group at KTH and the Science Life Laboratory in Stockholm with the support of the Swedish Research Council's Young Investigator grant, which has a low success rate. His research focuses on understanding fundamental biochemistry through the development of novel enzyme engineering strategies and sustainable production of biomaterials. In 2016, he received a FORMAS grant for his project 'AWESOM', aimed at creating novel sustainable biomaterials from renewable sources through enzyme discovery and design technologies. His work has attracted funding from various foundations, including the Royal Academy of Sciences and the Wennergren Foundation, and has received international recognition, including an award at the Gordon Research Conference. Syrén was also nominated to represent the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at a Nobel Laureate meeting in Chemistry in 2013, amidst thousands of young scientists globally.
