Biography

Per Gustafsson is a Professor of Epidemiology with a focus on Social Epidemiology at Umeå University. His research primarily engages with issues related to equity in health care, employing perspectives and methods from social epidemiology. He has a specific interest in the complex, intersectional health system inequities, and his investigations encompass explanations of social inequities in health, neighborhood effects on health, life course epidemiology, psychosocial epidemiology, and stress research. He serves as the Deputy Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health and is a member of the Norrland Observatory Equity Health Health Care research group. Over the years, he has led several research projects addressing areas such as equitable oral care in Sweden, the impact of national Covid-19-related policies on loneliness among the elderly, the population health effects of the free patient choice reform, and the intersectional mental health issues within marginalized communities, including the Sámi in Sweden. Gustafsson is also involved in teaching advanced doctoral-level courses on epidemiology, social epidemiology, biostatistics, and the philosophy of science.
