Biography

Per Larsson is affiliated with the University of Gothenburg, where he focuses on research related to small airway diseases, which are critical for respiration, particularly in highly exposed environments. His team has developed a non-invasive particle-exhalation assay (PExA) for collecting small airway lining fluid, addressing the challenges in retrieving biological samples due to the inaccessibility of the affected regions. The method employs deep breathing techniques to induce particle formation in the small airways, enabling the collection of lung lining fluid in small quantities for extensive lipid and protein analysis. His work has gained acclaim, receiving the Arvid Carlsson Award from Sahlgrenska Science Park in 2020. His research interests include the role of surfactant lipids in lung function and disease development, lipidomics, and advanced analytical techniques such as mass spectrometry for studying respiratory conditions. Larsson's contributions to aerosol sampling have established a deeper understanding of the dynamics of lung surfactants in health and disease, particularly in connection to conditions like COVID-19 and asthma.
